Digital Fluency Intensive 7 - Devices
Connecting with Manaiakalani :Ubiquitous Learning.
Today Dorothy shared with us the Manaiakalani Kaupapa which allows us as teachers to make teaching and learning available - Anytime - Anywhere - Any Pace - Anyone.
As a teacher we can be design learning for our students - when we are not physically 'with them', and we can still be supporting their progress in a way that addresses their learning styles and goals. Learning can be outside of the school walls. We can capture what is essential for our kids to learn and it allows rewindable content, of what is most important for our kids to reach their learning goals.
What resounded with me this week was the number 30,000,000 - deficit of words discursive conversation - missing language. In my classroom experiences I deal with the consequences of this when teaching numeracy and literacy.
Evidence from Lockdowns and Summer learning journeys has shown us that students can make extraordinary gains when taking ownership of their own learning. Rewindable, accessible learning allows the student be empowered to take their learning home and to share with their aiga.
What am I proud of?I am most proud of the way our Team worked collaboratively to raise our efficacy in online teaching. i was quite nervous about sharing in a live meet but over time we all become more comfortable with the process. I am proud of how we connected our home learning sites and blogs to recognise the work that our tamariki were doing at home.
What do I regret?
I regret that I wasn't as prepared as I probably should have been. I had to very quickly come to terms with making quicktime movies, running meets, and connecting multimodal learning to address a Learning objective.
What have I taken forward?
I think the most important change that has come about from remote teaching has been the direct contact I have had with parents. This time was an opportunity to personally connect with Parents and whanau as home teachers and work together with them to support their tamariki.
Connecting with Manaiakalani :Cybersmart curriculum
Ties together the Four parts of our Manaiakalani Kauapapa. Teachers are seeking to be fluent in the language of positivity around the use of our devices with students. Connected with digital citizenship - teaching sequence - cybersmart curriculum was devised to make our learners "at home in a digital world". provide our children with guidelines for making smart decisions in the digital world just as we do when talking to them about the physical world.
Smart - is about people and how we behave. Being aware of the impact of their digital footprint currently and in their futures. "Not just for school it is for life". What does my digital footprint communicate about me.
Secure - is about the systems which support us in our online capacity. Manaiakalani is at the forefront of supporting us as teachers with the resources e.g cybersmart site and tech systems e.g Hapara.
Connecting with Digital Technologies: Ipads, Chromebooks
Today we spent some time working with chromebooks. This was my first experience on a chromebook and I worked with a fellow teacher to do a deep dive into shortcuts and understand the workings of this device. Although I teach in an Ipad space it was useful to see where my students are heading and how the things they learn on Ipads will scaffold them for this device.
We also explored Explain Everything. This is the app which is used most often in my classroom. It was great to see other teachers having a go at this app and coming to grips with it.
In our create time I chose to design a screencastify movie which addressed the Smart Parents value in the cybersmart curriculum. I think this will be a valuable addition to my class site as it will help my parents better understand the value of our Maniakalani kaupapa.
Kia ora Deb. I hope you enjoyed the face-to-face DFI experience. It's funny how quickly running a Google Meet became the norm in lockdown. Like most things new it was scary at first but then just became part of the regular day. You might just need to change the permissions on your Screencastify for us to view it.
